Centrum – close to everything you need
What are the best spots to visit for expats in Rotterdam Centrum?
The city centre (“Centrum”) is home to shopping and business districts plus many cultural institutions, the main nightlife and the central station. There are excellent accommodation options for expats in the area but prices may be a little higher than elsewhere in the city.
Quality of life
Like any city centre, Centrum is a busy place with a mix of business, shopping and residential districts. A lot of Rotterdam’s cultural highlights are here with many museums and art galleries not to mention some of its most striking architecture – both modern and old. With so much going on and so many people around, parking can be an issue although the situation is getting better and, as a resident, you will be able to get a permit which at least makes it affordable. Rental prices for accommodation also tend to be higher than in other parts of the city but that’s the price you pay for the convenience of city centre living.
Housing options
There are all kinds of accommodation options in the centre of Rotterdam ranging from very modern high rise apartment blocks to characterful buildings dating back to the beginning of the last century. These older buildings tend to be split into very attractive apartments often with high ceilings and large windows which make them great places to live. Down by the Erasmus Bridge, there are many large, stately looking buildings offering premium living (at premium prices) as well as more modern new-builds to the east of the Nieuwe Werk district. Last but not least, a whole new neighbourhood is being built in Coolhaven in the coming years called Little C which will be a residential area next to the Museum Park. Hotspots
There are so many things to see and do in the Centrum district. The main shopping areas offer a selection of high-street and boutique shops. For eating and drinking, check out streets like Witte de With or Nieuwe Binnenweg which have all kinds of bars from the very traditional (like Westerpaviljoen) to the totally trendy (like the outdoor Rotterdam Biergarten). Music venues like Rotown, V11, Eurotrash and Bird regularly have live bands or DJs too. Whatever cuisine you are looking for, you’ll find it in Centrum with a wide variety of international restaurants. Culture-wise, head to the Museum Park where you will find many world class museums and art galleries. And don’t forget to just chill out at one of the many waterside spots that make the city so special such as Veerhaven or Oude Haven. Find out more about Rotterdam districts and hotspots here.
